CM wants alliance to continue for local bodies poll

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, JUNE 27. The Chief Minister and AIADMK general secretary, Ms. Jayalalithaa, today said her party would like the alliance forged for the Assembly polls to continue for the local bodies poll.

Addressing a press conference here, she said the AIADMK wanted cordial relations with all ``friendly'' parties. (The AIADMK contested the Assembly polls in the company of the TMC, the Congress, the PMK, the CPI(M), the CPI, the INL and the AIFB.)

However, Ms. Jayalalithaa saw no role for the AIADMK in deciding whether the alliance parties should support the PMK or the TMC in the Rajya Sabha election. The AIADMK, she said, could win four seats, but needed support from allies. There were thus no surplus votes to transfer to either the TMC or the PMK.

But, if the TMC and the PMK approached the AIADMK, which was the leader of the alliance, on the allocation of the fifth seat, then the issue could discussed, she said. (The AIADMK-led alliance can win only five of the six seats for which elections are due. Both the TMC and the PMK are vying for the fifth seat.)
