Southern Railway to introduce six trains

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, JUNE 27. Introduction of six new trains is the major feature in the new Southern Railway time-table which comes into effect on Sunday.

The new services are: the Chennai Egmore - Jodhpur (weekly) Express; Nagercoil - Howrah (weekly) Express via Trivandrum and Ernakulam; Trivandrum - Palghat Town (daily) Express; Ernakulam - Jaipur (weekly) Superfast Express; Ernakulam - Pune (weekly) Express and Yesvantpur - Vasco-da-gama (Goa) (bi- weekly) Express.

Southern Railways is also extending one service of the Chennai Egmore - Guwahati (weekly) Express to Dibrugarh Town and the Tirunelveli - Tiruchi Passenger to Thanjavur. The frequency of the Ernakulam - Rajkot Express is being increased from once a week to twice a week and it will be extended upto Okha.

The Coimbatore - Nizammudin Kongu Express, now running via Salem, Jolarpettai, Renigunta, Gudur, Vijayawada and Balharsha will run via Salem, Dharmapuri, Bangalore, Guntakkal, Secunderabad and Balharsha. This will provide a direct service to Secunderabad for the Coimbatore passengers. Similarly, the Madurai - Jammu Tawi Express will be re-routed via Dindigul, Tiruchi and Karur instead of the existing Dindigul and Karur to enable passengers in Tiruchi to have a direct link train to New Delhi and Jammu Tawi.

The weekly special train between Chennai Egmore and Nagercoil has been made a permanent weekly service following good response from south-bound passengers. While the service between Chennai and Nagercoil will run on Friday, in the return direction it will run on Sunday.

The Chief Public Relations Officer, Mr. S. Sridhar, said the new golden jubilee time-table like last year would be passenger- friendly. Apart from the regular features, details of connecting services for various trains had been included this time. A special feature on various hill stations for the convenience of tourists was an added attraction of the all-India railway time table this year, he added.

Both the all-India and Southern Railway time-tables would be available for sale in railway book stalls and all computer reservation centres in the zone. As there was a good response from passengers for the time-table last year, the administration had substantially increased the print order, he added.
