10,000 jobless as jute mill announces lockout

BARRACKPORE (West Bengal), JUNE 25. A National Jute Manufacturing Corporation (NJMC) mill at Khardah in North 24 Parganas was declared lockout today rendering nearly 10,000 employees jobless.

The Khardah jute mill, a public sector NJMC unit in difficulty along with its other units in the State, was declared lockout following a recent labour unrest a week ago, official sources said.

The mill authorities attributed the cause of the lock-out to non- availability of raw material, lack of modernisation and the labour trouble. The NJMC authorities had sent the revival proposals of its mills with a package worth Rs. 2500 crores. Thus, the number of closed jute mills at this industrial area in the district rose to nine. The Reliance Jute Mill at Bhatpara near here was declared under suspension of work on June 21 last.
