3 inter-State dacoits apprehended

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, JUNE 25. The Bellary District Police apprehended three members of a dreaded inter-State gang of dacoits, who are said to belong to Stuartpuram in Guntur District in Andhra Pradesh. They were allegedly involved in 47 dacoity and robbery cases in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.

The accused were identified as Thammishetty Chitty (31), Chauta Anand (26) and Mugali Sudhakar (35). Chitty, according to the police, was a prize catch as he was one of the gang leaders from Stuartpuram.

Of the 21 cases of dacoity and robbery, three each were from Hospet while one dacoity involving the three accused was reported from Kamalapur. They were also allegedly involved in two cases each in Bidar and Hubli-Dharwad and a dacoity each in Gulbarga, Bangalore, Mysore, Hyderabad and Bhilai in Madhya Pradesh.

The accused, police said, were also involved in robbery cases reported from Gangavathi, Zaheerabad, Kolar and a burglary in Zaheerabad.

Police have so far recovered gold jewellery and other property valued at Rs. 3 lakh from the trio.

Police said the three accused were hardcore professional dacoits and well educated. "Thammishetty Chitty is a B.A. drop-out, while Chouta Anand is a PUC drop-out. All the three can speak and understand English. Chauta Anand can speak Telugu, Kannada, English and Hindi, and was educated in Hubli. The mother of one of the accused is working in the Railways. All of them have admitted committing offences for easy money and as a way of life," police added.

The trio and their associates, police said, moved by train or road and selected big towns, scouting for posh and isolated houses. "In the night, after seeing late night films, they enter a chosen house by removing the window grill before commiting a dacoity. They use less violence and intimidate the inmates with knives, and usually take away gold, silver and cash," police said.
