Ravindranath takes over as DGP
By Our Staff Reporter
CHENNAI, JUNE 25. In the last step of the State police revamp,
Mr. A. Ravindranath today took over as Director-General of
Police.
The outgoing DGP, Dr. R. Rajagopalan, was posted as DGP
(Training), earlier post held by Mr. Ravindranath. Though the
transfer of Dr. Rajagopalan had been on the cards for some time,
the speed with which the posting came took several officials by
surprise. The orders were issued around 4 p.m. and the new DGP
took charge at 5 p.m.
Speaking to mediapersons after assuming office, Mr. Ravindranath
said his priority would be maintaining law and order, prevention
of crime and implementation of welfare schemes for police
personnel.
``Unless the welfare measures are taken care of, you cannot
expect to improve the morale of the force. I will be very
sympathetic to the men and consider their problems with a humane
approach'', he said. Thanking the Chief Minister, Ms.
Jayalalithaa, for making him DGP, he said priority would be given
for prevention of crime against women. To facilitate speedy issue
of additional copies of FIR or other documents to complainants
seeking justice, there were plans for installing photocopying
machines at all police stations.
Commenting on operations against Veerappan, he said ``We will go
all out to capture the forest brigand either dead or alive. The
earlier operations did not succeed as they were not a
wholehearted attempt. The tribals in the forest area would not be
harassed and they need not have any fear, he said.
