Bengal warns Muslim marriage registrars
KOLKATA JUNE 25. The West Bengal Government today warned Muslim
marriage registration officers of action if they refused to
register a Muslim's second, third or fourth marriage.
To a question in the State Assembly by Mr. Abdul Mannan of the
Congress, the Law Minister, Mr. Nisith Adhikari, said the
Government had not received any such complaint.
``If any specific complaint is received, we will take action.''
Admitting irregularities in the recruitment of Muslim marriage
registrars, he said the Government had set up district-wise
recruitment committees to decentralise the recruitment process
and make it more transparent.
He said at present, there were 250 Muslim marriage registration
officers and advertisements had been given for further
recruitment.
The appointment process was likely to be completed by next month.
Pointing out that both the Kazi's Act and the Muslim Marriage
Registration Act were in operation in the State, the Minister
said steps were being taken to appoint an officer who would take
care of the religious aspect of the wedding as also its
registration.
