A futile wait for depositors
By Our Staff Reporter
CHENNAI, JUNE 23. It is a long wait for depositors of the closed
finance companies, not for getting back their money alone but for
even meeting senior police officers of the Economic Offences Wing
(EOW) too.
The depositors, who arrived at the City Police Commissioner's
office, Egmore, at 10 a.m. today, the scheduled venue and time of
what was supposed to be their first interaction with the EOW
police after the AIADMK came to power, returned dejectedly as
none of the officials turned up till almost 11-30 a.m.
It was a futile wait for them as many had come with a lot of
expectations from the new regime and police set-up. More than the
absence of the officials, what peeved them was the treatment
meted out to them when they enquired about the meeting.
Mr. K. R. Shyam Sundar, the EOW IG, who was supposed to address
the depositors as per the invitation received by The Hindu, was
not available for comments. The invitation said the IG would be
meeting the depositors of the city-based finance companies that
`swindled' public deposits, at 10 a.m. on June 23, at the Police
Commissioner's office, Egmore.
More than 406 finance companies, both unincorporated and
registered under the Companies Act, that collected an estimated
Rs.1,780 crores as public deposits from over 10 lakh people, had
closed down since August 1996.
