By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, JUNE 23. Karnataka Milk Federation, the third largest dairy cooperative in the country in terms of milk procurement and sales, today formally entered the export segment, sending off the first consignment of 150 tonnes of skimmed milk powder to Nepal.

Manufactured by the Mandya Milk Union, the milk powder is part of KMF's 300-tonne purchase deal with the Dairy Development Corporation (DDC), Nepal. The second consignment of 150 tonnes is scheduled to be despatched during the first week of July. The DDC is buying the milk powder at a cost of Rs. 2.4 crores.

Flagging off the first consignment here, the Minister for Sugar and Animal Husbandry, Mr. A. Krishnappa, said KMF had also received enquiries for supply of skimmed milk powder from Sri Lanka. The modalities for export were being worked out.

Mr. Krishnappa said the State had rich sugar resources and was open to export deals with Nepal. Quality and timely delivery would be assured, he said.

The KMF procures about 20 lakh litres of milk a day of which it sells around 15.5 lakh litres. The surplus is converted to skimmed milk powder and butter.
