Lift ban on LTTE
Sir, - This has reference to the news report ``Peace process
adrift'' (June 14). It seems there is a stalemate in the peace
process in Sri Lanka after the LTTE's demand for de-proscription.
The Sri Lankan Government has sidelined the Norwegian
facilitator, Mr. Erik Solheim, suspecting his neutrality.
The desire of the LTTE to come to the negotiation table as a free
and equal partner is quite justifiable. There is a chance now to
stop the 18-year-old bloodshed and that should not be missed.
Those who support the efforts of Mr. Solheim may pressure the Sri
Lankan Government into accepting the demand of the LTTE to lift
the ban.
The Government of India, as a prelude to the peace efforts of the
Norwegian Government, may rescind the ban on the Tigers so that
Sri Lanka can follow suit.
Dharmaraj Joseph,
Tirunelveli
