Fall in SSLC pass percentage

PONDICHERRY, JUNE 18. The Tourism and Education Minister, Mr.A.V. Subramanian, today said the pass percentage in the SSLC examination was 74.94 this year as against 76.03 last year.

There was a fall of 2.09 per cent, he said releasing the results of the SSLC and Matriculation examinations here.

As many as 10,219 of 10,642 students came out successful. The Government schools at Thattanchavady (59 students) and Reddiarpalayam (59 students) registered cent percent pass. The Thattanchavady school achieved the distinction for the second successive year. These schools would be entitled to receive a cash award of Rs. one lakh each under a scheme of the Education Department. Twentyseven private schools registered cent percent pass.

Mr.Subramanian said a cash award of Rs one lakh each would be presented six Government schools in rural areas for their performance. The schools are the GHS at Koodapakkam (97.2%) the GHSS, Ambagarathur in Karaikal (96.43%), the Ramamoorthy GHS, Madukkarai (94.74%), the Sindhanai Sirpi Singaravelar Govt. Boys HS at Veerampattinam (93.62%), the GHS at Korkadu (91.3%) and the GHS at P.S.Palayam (90,2%).

Ms. R.Anitha and Ms.T.Sujaritha, both from the Immaculate Heart of Mary's Hr.Secondary School, stood first in Pondicherry. They scored 489 out of 500 marks. They are followed by Ms.R.Sooriya of the Immaculate Heart of Mary's Girls High School at Villianoor, who scored 488 marks.

Among the Government school students, Ms. S.Kalaivani alias Selvi of the Subramaniar Bharathiar Government Girls High School scored the highest of 480 marks, followed by Ms. A.Savitha of the Tiruvalluvar GGHSS (474), Ms.G.Vijaya of the Subramania Bharathiar GGHSS (474), K.Tirunavukarasu of the Navalar Nedunchezhia GHSS (473) and Ms.S.Saranya Devi of the Subramania Bharathiar GGHS (473).

94.17 per cent in matric exam

Mr. Subramanian said the Calve College Higher Secondary School, the only Government school offering courses in the matriculation stream, put up a poor performance this year, with only eight of 24 students passing the examination. Last year, the school registered a pass percentage of 86.96.

The authorities would go into the reasons that led to the dismal performance, official sources said.

Five private matriculation higher secondary schools have posted cent percent pass. They are: St.Joseph of Cluny Girls HSS at Lawspet, St Patrick's HSS at Saradambal Nagar, Sri Sankara Vidyalaya Matriculation HSS at ECR Road, Sri Sankara Vidyashram HSS at Odiampet and the Alpha Matriculation School at Mangalakshmi Nagar.

C. Ranjit of St Patrick HSS, G. Sudha Nancy of St. Joseph of Cluny Girls HSS stood first and second, scoring 1051 and 1037 marks out of 1100. The third rank was shared by three students: V. Muthamizhvendan of the Petit Seminaire, R.Vijay Prakash and P.Ambika of St Patrick's Matric HSS, both scoring 1035 marks.

The pass percentage in the matriculation examination was 94.17 with 872 of 926 students passing the examination.

Mr.Subramanian said the Government relaxed the norms relating to infrastructure, qualification of teachers, and certain aspects of working condition of the teachers for a year. This would benefit nearly 125 schools. no new school would be permitted to be opened in private sector in the Union Territory without permission from the Government
