Girls maintain good performance

CHENNAI, JUNE 18. Girls lived upto the expectations in the State
tenth standard examinations, the results of which were released
here today. They have scored a better pass percentage than boys
in the SSLC, Matriculation, Anglo-Indian and OSLC examinations.
The overall pass percentage among candidates in SSLC is 70.7,
while in the matriculation stream, it is 92 and in the Anglo-
Indian stream, 93. The pass percentage among girls in the SSLC is
73.7, just marginally better than last year's 73 per cent.
Compared to last year, the boys have fared well with 68.3 per
cent, notching up the figure by nearly two per cent.
In the matric stream, girls have scored 94 per cent (last year's
score: 92 per cent), while boys have bettered last year's score
(87 per cent) and settled at 91 per cent. In the Anglo-Indian
stream, for girls, the pass percentage is 95, a drop from last
year's 98 per cent. Among boys, there is a similar drop at 90 per
cent - nearly 5 per cent from last year.
Speaking to presspersons, Mr. S. Paramasivan, Director of
Government Examinations, said the number of students who took the
examinations in all the three streams had shown a substantial
increase over the past three years. This was a positive trend, he
said, adding 7.2 lakh students had written the SSLC exam, 76,960
students had taken the matriculation exam and 4,928 students
wrote the Anglo-Indian examinations.
Two and a half lakh students secured an aggregate of 60 per cent
and above in SSLC, while for the matric and Anglo- Indian
streams, the figures were 57,669 and 4,019 respectively.
The number of students who scored centum in mathematics in SSLC,
matric and the Anglo-Indian stream increased substantially
compared to last year's results. In SSLC, 9,502 students scored
full marks in mathematics, 714 matriculation students scored
centum and 99 from the Anglo-Indian stream also scored full
marks.
Eight students shared the first three State ranks in the SSLC
stream this year. N. Subashini of the Sarah Tucker Girls HSS,
Palayamkottai, and P. Yegammai of the SV Hindu GHSS, Tiruchi,
stood first with a grand total of 490. R. Anita and T. Sucharita
of the Immaculate Heart of the Mary's Higher Secondary School,
Pondicherry, M. Aparajita of the Murugadhanushkodi School,
Tondiarpet, Chennai, and M.S. Kalaiarasi of the St. Josephs GHSS,
Dindigul, came a close second with 489. R. Suriya of the
Immaculate Heart of Mary's GHSS, Cannuvapet, and P. Dhinesh from
the SSDB HS, Thiruvengadu, brought up the rear with 488 marks.
These students were felicitated by the Chief Minister Ms.
Jayalalithaa, at the Secretariat today.
Mark certificates will be distributed to the students on June 27
and 28.
Candidates desirous of applying for retotalling can do so between
July 2 and 6.
Specimen application and details of fees are available with the
inspecting officers, regional offices, district educational
offices and the Directorate of Government Examinations.
Though there was talk in the morning of an inquiry into
publication of results and toppers in a section of the media
today, officials later said an explanation might be sought from
some quarters.
