By Our Staff Reporter

KANNUR, JUNE 18. A police patrolling party opened fire when it came under bomb attack while chasing a group of IUML workers near Taliparamba here in the early hours of today. While an IUML worker, suspected to be among the group of culprits, was seriously injured when a bomb accidentally exploded, a policeman suffered minor injuries in the bomb attack.

The police said that the police team headed by the Circle Inspector, Mr. K. Prakash, was patrolling the highway at around 1 a.m. when it saw a group of around 20 people near two jeeps parked on the highway. When the police patrolling vehicle drove towards them, some of them escaped in one of the jeeps, while the rest took to their heels abandoning the other jeep. On finding some weapons inside the jeep, the police chased the fleeing men. By that time more police personnel headed by the Taliparamba SI, Mr. P.P. Sadanandan, also joined the patrolling team to chase the culprits.

The police said that the culprits hurled three country bombs against the police personnel. The SI then opened two rounds of fire using his service revolver. After some time, the police heard a country bomb explosion and a scream. When the police personnel rushed to the spot, they found a man with his right palm severed in the blast. He has been identified as IUML worker, Puthanpurayil Musthafa (28) from nearby Naduvil. The police said he was injured when the bomb he was carrying accidentally went off. The police rushed him to the Pariyaram medical college hospital (PMCH). Along with him, the police also arrested another IUML worker, Muhammed Kunhi, from the spot.

The police constable, K. Manoharan (32), suffered minor injuries in the bomb attack. He has been admitted to the PMCH.

The police said the culprits were suspected to be going towards nearby Kuppam which had been tense following clashes between CPI(M) and IUML workers yesterday.
