Cong. leaders not to appear before panel
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI, JUNE 18. The Congress has decided that none of its
leaders, including the Chief Ministers, would appear before the
Constitution Review Commission since the party felt the exercise
to be ``ill-conceived and totally unwarranted''.
This was decided at the meeting of the Chief Ministers with the
Congress president and senior leaders here on Saturday, the party
spokesman, Mr. S. Jaipal Reddy, said today.
At the meeting, some of the Chief Ministers, who received an
invitation from the review panel, expressed themselves against
appearing before the commission since their party was opposed to
the review, Mr. Reddy said.
The Congress Working Committee leaders, Mr. Pranab Mukherjee and
Ms. Ambika Soni, endorsed the Chief Ministers' opinion.
Mr. Reddy said there was no need to direct anyone not to appear
before the commission since all leaders were in agreement.
Asked how the party viewed the appearance of the former Prime
Minister, Mr. P.V. Narasimha Rao, before the commission, the
party spokesman preferred not to comment on it or on a letter
senior leader, Mr. Arjun Singh, is understood to have written
against Mr. Rao's move.
