Wall collapse: Mohanty promises action against builder

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, JUNE 12. The MCH Commissioner, Dr. P.K. Mohanty, who visited the site of the wall collapse on Road No. 12 of Banjara Hills on Tuesday, said that strict action would be taken against the builder of the apartment block whose retaining wall had collapsed, killing nine persons.

Pacifying the angry crowd, Dr. Mohanty minced no words in saying that the apartment being constructed by Shiv Shakti builders had to take responsibility for the deaths. ``The retaining wall has been built with substandard material. This is complete negligence and the builder must be prosecuted. A case would be booked against him and he would have to go to the jail,'' he said.

However, he expressed his inability to demolish the apartment block as necessary documents like the soil testing, architect's and concerned structural engineer's certificates, were all in order as per the existing Government Order and the same was submitted to the High Court as well. But the building would be confiscated and a hefty fine would be levied.

Ordering for the immediate demolition of the remaining wall, he sought the help of structural engineers from the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) to verify the quality of the construction of the building and the wall.
