Bid by extremists to create tension: CPI

By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JUNE 12. A CPI delegation, which visited Nadapuram on June 9, has described the situation in the area as very grave and called for urgent measures to restore normalcy there.

The team, comprising Mr. P.K. Vasudevan Nair, Mr. Panniyan Ravindran, Mr. E.K. Vijayan and Mr. Sathyan Mokeri, called on the Chief Minister, Mr. A.K. Antony, here this evening and submitted a memorandum seeking his urgent intervention to restore peace in the area.

The team said the people in the locality were still in the grip of fear and were not sleeping inside their homes. The situation was so grim that shops do not remain open for the whole day. This had hit the sale of even food articles. Violence erupted in the area after the murder of the CPI(M) worker, Binu, on June 2. The police have not been able to nab the guilty even 10 days after the incident. Violence following the murder was quite widespread and several shops and homes were looted by miscreants.

The delegation alleged that certain extremist groups were making a planned bid to disrupt peace in the area and drew the Chief Minister's attention to reports that certain external agencies were aiding these groups and providing them arms. The intention of such agencies was clearly to foment communal passions in the area, the delegation said.

It urged the Chief Minister to take a personal initiative to restore peace in the area and bridge the gap between different sections of people. It also sought the immediate arrest of those who had killed the CPI(M) worker and payment of compensation to those who had sustained loss of property in the violence.
