Land a lucrative job
A MOMENT of truth is a point in time when the reality of what a
man is, assaults him full blast on the face. And he can't help
looking in the mirror of self-appraisal. I face my moment(s) of
truth when I call on my friends grown fat, literally and
figuratively, on a diet of cyber-dollars; and also some big
league non-IT professionals. They never fail to stagger me with
the trappings of prosperity - big houses, big cars and wives that
could give screen-goddesses a complex. I return from such
encounters more humbled and less complacent.
Before I go on with my rambling thoughts, let me attend to the
business on hand. There are websites out there that help job
seekers and recruiters find each other. For starters, here's a
list of websites offering recruitment resources for those in the
IT field.
Computerjobs.com, y-axis.com, searchitjobs.com,
softwaredeveloperjobs.com, cioljobs.com, h1bjobs.com,
h1bsponsors.com, jobcurry.com, itcareers.com, jobs4it.com,
dice.com, techies.com, justtechjobs.com, information-technology-
jobs.com, softcareers.com, people-softemployment.com,
surf4jobs.com, itmoonlighter.com, computerwork.com,
geekfinder.com, programing.com, hitechpros.com, swiftjobs.com,
ishunter.com, skillsvillage.com, webprogrammerjobs.com,
webdesignerjobs.com, softwaredeveloper.com, javajobsonline.com,
webmasteremployment.com, ecommerceemployment.com,
visualbasicjobs.com, ustechjobs.com, powerbuilderjobs.com, sap-
resources.com, developers.net, hotlinuxjobs.com,
cplusplusjobs.com, coboljobs.com, systemsnaalyst.com,
webjobsusa.com and clickitjobs.com.
Let me get back to the harangue. A man's societal identity is, to
a good extent, defined by what he does (not necessarily how well
he does it). Though a man's profession is not as immutable an
identity as caste and religion are, it comes a close third.
The second question a man puts to a stranger he meets is
invariably: "What are you doing?" We are conditioned to identify
ourselves with what we do.
That's because of the significance it has for our lives. What we
do and how much we earn decide, to a large extent, how well we
live.
Now on to the business. Here is a list of top India-specific
websites providing recruitment services.
Timesjobsandcareers.com, naukri.com, jobkhoj.com, naukri2000.com,
jobtrove.com, headstartexpress.com, placementindia.com,
indianparttimejobs.com, alltimejobs.com, career1000.com,
careerage.com, jobszillion.com, aidnjobs.com, prizedjobs.com,
jobspoint.com and 3pjobs.com.
An unpalatable reality. We scrimp and save for decades, wearing
the austerity belt twenty-four hours a day, and wish on a new
moon for that "dream" flat (800 sq.ft.) in the suburbs.
Yet more often than not most of us fall short of the dream. But
the cyber gods and goddesses (a good number of them just twenty-
something) fly down on the wings of a silver eagle and close
deals for big flats in prime locations before you could say Jack
Robinson (should I say Bill Gates?).
Now a list of websites offering information on IT-related
opportunities in the United Kingdom.
Computerstaff.net, it-opportunities.co.uk, 1st4ukitjobs.co.uk,
bluefruit.co.uk, contractdb.com and handsonsolutions.com.
Now, the harangue. Looking back I have a lot of admiration and,
let me admit, a jot of envy (isn't envy the greatest flattery?)
for some of my batchmates for the engine oil smoothness with
which they switched over to lucrative fields - say, IT and
management - when they realised that what they had on their hands
were useless wooden geese.
And then there were those of us who did not see the wooden geese
for what they were. We were sure it was only a matter of time
before the golden eggs started coming.
And when we realised our folly, it was a bit too late. Most of us
were too rusty around the edges for any enterprising switch-over.
We had no option but to reconcile ourselves to the unpleasant
fact that we had tarried too long on a fading, silvery star.
Let's now see what resources the Internet has for those seeking
employment in Singapore, Saudi Arabia, Canada, Australia and the
Asia-Pacific.
Jobasia.com.sg, jobpilot.com.sg, jobstreet.com.sg,
monster.com.sg, jobbank.com.sg, careernext.com.sg,
jobmaster.com.sg, bestsaudijobs.com, canadajob.com, canjobs.com,
canadajobsearch.com, allcanadianjobs.com, plusjobs.com,
actualjob.com, technoskill.com, positionwatch.com,
hotjobs.com.au, topjobs.com.au, jobs-at.au.com, jobnet.com.au,
zdnet.com.au, mycareer.com.au, itjobs.fairfax.com.au,
ignite.net.au, fraseryoung.com.au and jobsdb.com.
Another thing that staggers my imagination is the value assigned
to doctorates and multiple degrees in these changing times. I
know of a few Ph.D. holders who languish in the dingy, ramshackle
room of poor remuneration.
That they adorn, with exemplary skills, the fields they operate
in, doesn't make any difference to their paymasters. Their
academic qualifications are no more valuable (monetarily) than is
a trove of medals to a well-decorated retired Army officer. They
may serve to fix a sagging ego, but not a leaking tap or a
creaking door.
Let's get back to the Internet. Here are resources for
freelancers.
Guru.com, freejob.com, freelance-work-exchange.com, elance.com,
freelancehelp.com, freelancers.com, allfreelance.com,
a2zmoonlighter.com (IT-oriented), workathomecareers.com and
freelancebbs.com.
The tail-piece. There are other moments of truth - positive ones.
When a man realises that when there are so many things to look
at, he could fail to notice what's right in front of him. And
that what's right in front of him is what he has to live with.
And that most of the time it's not as bad a bargain as he thinks
it is. And that by looking over the fence into his neighbour's
garden, he overlooks the bluebird of happiness singing in his
own. That goes for one's profession and pay packets. I have faced
my moment(s) of truth.
