Another journalism institute in City

THE SRI Sri Centre for Media Studies will begin its first 10- month postgraduate diploma programme in Journalism next month.

Graduates or postgraduates in any discipline with a minimum of 50 per cent marks from a recognised university can apply. The institute authorities says: ``Classroom lectures and tutorials will be translated into an existential experience of spotting news, pounding the streets and eventually editing and designing newspapers under deadline pressure.''

Now a glimpse into the centre's stated objectives: ``To build relationship with the media industry, network with media professionals in the country and abroad and with their help attain the best standards in professional journalism training to meet the requirements of the media industry.''

Selection to the course will be based on an all-India entrance examination and personal interview. Details may be had on ph: 6645106.

Faculty training

The Garden City College of Science and Management Studies organised a short-term orientation programme for the faculty members in the computer education field recently. The programme was sponsored by the All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and coordinated by the Indian Society for Technical Education.

Participants from colleges in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Maharastra attended the programme, which featured lectures and seminars, and discussions on revision of syllabi and problems in computer science teaching. Peepal Tree-2001

RV QuizCorp, the quiz and literary activities organisation of R.V.College of Engineering is organising its annual all-India quizfest, ``Under the Peepal Tree'', from June 15 to 17 at the R.V.Teachers' College, IV Block, Jayanagar.

The fest will feature six quiz contests, five of which will be open only for college students. They are the General Quiz; Audi Vedi Vici, the Audio/Video Quiz; IndiGenius, the India Quiz; BITS and PC's, the IT Quiz and Game Theory, and the sports quiz. The registration for these five contests are free. The corporate quiz, which has a registration fee of Rs. 500, is open exclusively for corporates.

The philosophy of the RV QuizCorp is ``to encourage curiosity and inquisitiveness among college students whose creative faculties tend to get stifled by the claustrophobic syllabi''.

IBM course

IBM has announced its National Entrance Test (NET) for entry into the IBM Advanced Certificate in Software Engineering (IBM ACSE) course, a structured software development programme offered at centres running IBM Advanced Career Education (IBM-ACE) in India. The test will be held on June 10 in about 100 cities in the country.

The test results will be out on June 18, and the course will start on July 2. Aspiring candidates go through a selection criterion to qualify for the eight-month, fast-track course featuring Enterprise computing, Java, Web programming, Object- oriented programming and Oracle.

The IBM ACSE course is open to graduates and post-graduates in all disciplines as well as diploma (three-year course) holders. The course fee is Rs. 64,000 in Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune and Noida and Rs. 59,000 in other cities.

The first semester of the course will cover Introduction to programming with C, Data structures and algorithms, Linux basics, Computer architecture, Operating systems and systems programming, RDBMS concepts and oracle, and TCP/IP network programming.

The second semester features object-oriented Programming with C++, Core Java, Web programming; OOAD using UML, software engineering and Project. The final semester features Enterprise Java, Enterprise applications development using XML, Emerging communications technologies and project.
