Residents allege contamination of drinking water
By Our Staff Reporter
CHENNAI, JUNE 5.
Residents of AVM Avenue, Virugambakkam, are agitated over
contamination of drinking water in their colony by sewage water.
Some residents noticed on June 1 that contaminated water was
coming out of the handpumps. A representation was made to the
Metrowater seeking immediate action, but in vain.
The locality had a long history of drinking water contamination
and other related problems. The L and T carried out lead
detection and rectification work last year and the pollution was
checked. However, subsequent work for laying Metrowater pipelines
for other projects, and the digging work undertaken by the
organisations such as Telephones and TNEB resulted in damage to
some sewer and drinking water lines, leading to contamination.
The residents also complain that some unscrupulous elements are
digging up the connections done up by L and T, claiming to fix
the `nipple' for supply of more water to the residents. They take
money from the residents for carrying out the work, but end up
damaging the lead-proof system.
Metrowater personnel, for clearing the system of any blockade
caused by polythene bags, opened up the L and T laid system and
were not able to restore the connections properly, said Mr.
W.P.Rajkumar, Secretary, AVM Avenue Welfare Association.
