New prosecutor for coal case

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, JUNE 6. A new Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) has been appointed by the AIADMK Government for conducting trial in the cases pending before the court of the Special Judge-II, Mr. S.S.P. Darwesh.

Mr. M. Chandrasekaran today filed the memo of appearance along with a copy of the government order on his appointment, in the controversial `coal import deal case' when it came up for hearing.

Besides the coal case, the `disproportionate wealth case' against the former Chief Secretary, Mr. N. Haribhaskar, is pending before Special Court-II.

After filing the memo, Mr. Chandrasekaran sought time to acquaint himself with the facts of the coal case and the relevant documents. Following this, the court posted the case for June 12 and 13.

Mr. Chandrasekaran is perhaps the first SPP to take over a case pending before the Special Court after the AIADMK regained power.

With the appointment of the SPP, trial in the case is expected to go full steam again from next week. Examination of witnesses could not be continued following the Assembly election process, the taking over of a new government and the resignation of the SPPs, who were appointed during the DMK rule.

Following the new prosecutor's appointment, one version is that government orders appointing the SPPs for the other cases can also be expected soon.
