Operations to nab Veerappan in 2 weeks: Dawaram

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, JUNE 6. After a meeting with the Home Secretary, Mr. Naresh Gupta, the chief of the Special Task Force, Mr. W.I. Dawaram, today announced that the operations to nab forest brigand Veerappan would begin in two weeks from now.

In the middle of reconstituting the STF, Mr. Dawaram said he would have to get rid of the deadwood in the force and ``infuse fresh blood'' before starting the operations again. He would finalise a force of about 250 personnel after meeting the men volunteering to join.

Although the services of the IG, Mr. K. Vijaykumar, now with the BSF, were sought from the Centre, there was no word as yet. However, the operations would go on with or without Mr. Vijaykumar. Already, there was a DIG, Mr. Tamilselvan, in place, Mr. Dawaram pointed out.

As for joint operations with the Karnataka Government, he said there ought to be a coordination between the two States on this issue. He was yet to contact his counterparts in Karnataka. Asked whether he would head the joint operations, he said: ``You have seen the reports (to that effect)''.

Mr. Dawaram discussed with the Home Secretary details of forming the STF.
