Rs.70 lakhs to tackle stray dog menace
By Our Staff Reporter
BANGALORE, JUNE 3. The Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) has
allocated Rs.70 lakhs to tackle the stray dog menace in the City,
the Mayor Ms. Prema Cariappa, has said.
Speaking at the launch of Stray Dog Free Bangalore (SDFB) here on
Sunday, Ms. Cariappa said the Government would grant 15 acres of
land on the outskirts of the City to create a shelter for dogs.
Stray dogs were becoming a danger to residents of the City and
their number was growing. Strict measures had to be taken jointly
by the BMP, voluntary organisations and the public to curb this
menace. Schoolchildren and commuters on two-wheelers were prone
to be victims of dog bites as they were chased by groups of dogs.
The Government and BMP had taken interest in this matter and
would support the need for bringing down the dog population in
Bangalore, she added.
Dr. C.V.Subramaniam, President of the new organisation that
solicits elimination of dogs in the City, said their organisation
was a ``genuine one with genuine objectives.'' Dogs could be kept
as pets in houses but ownerless dogs that did not belong to
anyone needed to be ``eliminated.''
Quoting statistics, Ms. Diana Bharucha, member of the
organisation said that according to the figures collected from
various hospitals in the City, Bangalore had as many as 6,000 dog
bite cases per month. There were two lakh stray dogs in Bangalore
and this figure was confirmed by the Mayor and former Director of
World Wide Fund, Mr. M.K.Srinath.
Though the Karnataka Municipal Corporation Act, 1976, states that
adequate provision should be made for destruction of stray and
ownerless dogs by the BMP, no such measures were taken, she
added.
