Ultimate aim is to re-establish Cong. rule, says Chidambaram

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, JUNE 3. The ultimate objective of the TMC-Democratic Forum is to re-establish the Congress rule in Tamil Nadu, Mr. P. Chidambaram, leader of the Forum, said on Saturday.

Addressing the forums's first meeting after the Assembly election in Royapuram here, Mr.Chidambaram said ``members of the Forum are not after power or grabbing ministerial positions. But they will strive for restoration of the Congress rule in the State. Till then, they will not rest'', he observed.

Stating that people always yearned for good governance and for a set-up that would eradicate poverty, Mr.Chidambaram, alluding to the results of the poll, said ``sometimes, people might have slipped but the search for good governance continues''. He did not consider ``this search ends with one election''.

Pointing out that political tradition demanded that criticisms should not be levelled against a new government within 100 days of its formation, he, however, said certain events in the last few days compelled him to break it. He condemned the arrest of the MLA, Mr. B. Ranganathan, and asked members of the TMC-DF not to get provoked by actions of certain forces which did not like the Forum's growth.

Outlining his organisation's composition, the former Finance Minister said it would accommodate persons ``who are well informed, not necessarily highly-educated, and all segments of the working class''.

He urged the members to demonstrate that the TMC-DF was an organisation with a difference, through their conduct in public life, speech and writing.

Mr.Chidambaram called upon the volunteers to enrol more members and make the organisation a strong force to contest the forthcoming elections to local bodies and co-operative societies.

The Kattumannarkoil MLA, Dr. P. Vallalperuman, said the organisation, in a matter of a few months, captured the imagination of different sections of the electorate.
