Film Review: ''Sonnaldhan Kadhala''

ONE CAN find big and beautiful sets and songs with mass appeal in T. Rajendhar's films. But in Chimbu Cine Arts' ``Sonnaldhan Kadhala'' the director has all these plus a story with interesting episodes. The screenplay is helped by his powerful dialogue, some eye-catching visuals and tunes which will be hummed by one and all.

Manivannan and wife Vadivukarasi live with their daughters and one son. Manivannan is a drunkard. Roja is the eldest of the children. She works in a finance company where the hero Murali also works. He loves her but she refuses to accept his love, mainly because she has to take care of her family. In the evenings she sings in a music troupe which is conducted by T.R., a journalist. His sister falls in love with police inspector Karan and marries him. T.R. writes about Karan's underhand dealings in his magazine and Karan, egged on by his mother, gets angry and tortures his wife.

One of the sisters of Roja is Kovai Sarala who is married to Vadivelu. He is always found drunk in the company of Manivannan and gives problems to the family. Manivannan also neglects his family. How the youngest in the family Master Kuralarasan, who is hardly nine, changes all and how T.R. unites the hero and heroine forms the rest of the story.

Roja maintains a sober look till the last frame and wins the sympathy of the audience. Murali has some good songs and few scenes to show his potential. It is T. Rajendhar all the way. He has come out with a powerful dialogue-oriented film for the masses.

His son Silambarasan has done two dance numbers which will be enjoyed by all. The only song, obviously meant for the front benchers which does not fit in well is that of Mumtaz.

A host of artistes figure in the film. The cast includes Vadivelu, Kovai Sarala, M. N. Nambiar, Kushboo, V. K. Ramaswamy, Y. Vijaya, ``Vennira Adai'' Murthy, Rajeev, Dhamu, Charlie, Mumtaz, Swathi, Rajasree, Anumohan, Madan Bob and Pandu.

Produced by T. R. Silambarasan, the story, screenplay, dialogue, lyrics, music, photography and direction are by T. Rajendhar.
