Sombir, Bhupinder adjudged the best

NEW DELHI, MAY 31. Haryana's Sombir and Bhupinder Thakur of Punjab were adjudged the `best wrestlers' in the freestyle and greco- roman categories, respectively, in the 22nd sub-junior boys National wrestling championship, which concluded at the NDMC Indoor Stadium here on Thursday.

Jind district-based Sombir overcame Punjab's Yogender 7-6 in the 63kg category final. Sombir, who trailed 2-5 at the breather, staged a fine recovery in the penultimate minute to better his third place which he achieved in the last edition of the tournament.

Bhupinder won his second successive title at the expense of Himachal Pradesh's Ajay Kumar with a 9-0 verdict in the 63kg greco-roman style.

In the girls section, Parveen Sihag won the `best wrestler' award. 14-year old Parveen, who trains at the Mahabir Stadium in Hissar under Subhash Verma, defeated MTNL's Poonam Bamal by fall in the 60kg category.

In the supremacy for the team championship, UP and Punjab emerged victorious in the boys' freestyle and greco-roman categories, respectively.

Haryana claimed the team championship in the girls section with a tally of 69 points.
