'Open Mettur dam on June 12'
By Our Staff Reporter
THANJAVUR, MAY 31. The Thanjavur district Congress Secretary, Mr.
K. Anbarasan appealed to the State Government to open the Mettur
dam on June 12 for Kuruvai cultivation in Cauvery delta
districts.
As the water level now stood at 90 feet (full level 120 feet) and
as there was a bright chance of good rain in Cauvery catchment
areas, there might not be any difficulty in opening the dam on
June 12, Mr. Anbarasan said.
He also appealed to the Government to complete soon construction
of the bridge across the Cauvery near Thiruvaiyaru.
Referring to frequent unscheduled power cuts in Thanjavur
district, he urged the Government to ensure proper supply for
agriculture pumpsets.
The district committee of the CPI also appealed to the Government
to open the Mettur dam on June 12 and open direct purchase
centres to buy summer paddy crop.
The State administrative committee meeting of the CPI will be
held here on June 12 and 13, a party release said here today.
