Procession to create awareness on road safety

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, MAY 25. About 100 students from five city colleges on Friday took out a procession from Ezhilagam to the Gandhi Statue along the Kamarajar Salai as part of the launch of the Road Safety Awareness Campaign for Two Wheelers. The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) and the Society for Automotive Fitness and Environment (SAFE) organised the campaign.

Students of the Loganathan Narayanaswamy Government College, Ponneri, D.B. Jain College, Vivekananda College, Nandanam Government Arts College and Madras Christian College went to a petrol bunk at Mandaveli to distribute booklets on vehicle maintenance. They also talked to the motorists on the need for wearing helmet and maintaining their vehicles.

Earlier, Mr. Rajat Nandi, Director General, SIAM, said the volunteers had undergone a two-day training on road rules and traffic control devices.

Mr. R. Ramakrishnan, president, SAFE, said his organisation would be a catalyst in the automobile industry's endeavour to fulfill its commitment to road safety and cleaner environment.

Mr. M.B. Pranesh, Transport Commissioner, said wearing helmets and avoidance of rash driving would save the lives of so many youths.

The month-long campaign, which will target 150 petrol pumps here, would begin on June 1. Students will collect data on the riders wearing helmets and other aspects of vehicle maintenance.
