NLC employees court arrest
By Our Staff Reporter
CUDDALORE, MAY 26. About 400 employees of the Neyveli Lignite
Corporation courted arrest, attempting to picket a thermal power
station today.
Police said the workers, affiliated to the CITU, the PMK, the
Labour Liberation Front and the Anna Labour Union, were taking
out a procession towards the power house from Block IX in Neyveli
Township when they were prevented.
The employees were lodged in a community hall.
They were protesting the ``dilly-dallying attitude'' adopted by
NLC executives to ending the strike in the NLC, according to
trade union sources.
At Pudhukuppam, about 30 members of unions affiliated to the
AICTU, the UTSE, the INTUC and the DMS launched a dharna
demanding an expeditious settlement of demands of the striking
workers.
Mr. S. Kuppuswamy, president, DMK labour wing, and Mr. Sivasamy,
Regional Labour Commissioner, arrived at Neyveli today to
facilitate expeditious negotiations.
Meanwhile, a regulatory order under Section 30 (2) of the Police
Act has been promulgated for 15 days in Neyveli Township.
The order banning unlawful assembly and processions came into
effect yesterday.
