Manpower Export Promotion Council on anvil

By J. Venkatesan

NEW DELHI, MAY. 26. The Government has planned to enact a law to set up a central Manpower Export Promotion Council (MEPC) and a welfare fund (Indian Overseas Workers Welfare Fund) for the well- being of Indian workers abroad. According to sources in the Government, a Bill to set up the MEPC and the fund is on the anvil. The object of creating the council is to ensure that the workers intending to go abroad are not fleeced or harassed by private recruiting agencies who collect hefty amounts from each candidate and sometimes even cheat them. Once established the MEPC will exercise direction, superintendence and control in recruiting Indian workers, particularly in the Gulf. The Councilwil l have regional offices in all major cities. The existing manpower corporations recognised by the government will have to register themselves with the council.
