Six ultras killed, Govt. building attacked
SRINAGAR, MAY 26. Six militants and a security personnel were
among eight persons killed in separate incidents since last night
in Jammu and Kashmir where ultras hurled a grenade at a heavily-
guarded government building injuring two civilians.
Three militants were killed in a fierce gunbattle between ultras
and Army troops in Doda district's Banihal area today, official
sources said.
They said the gunfight ensued when troops launched an operation
to flush out militants from the area, and added that three AK
rifles, 12 grenades, four rockets and some explosives were
recovered from the scene.
A self-styled deputy commander of Hizbul Mujahideen was killed in
an encounter with security forces at Safeda Ari in Surankote
sector of Poonch district, an official spokesman said.
He said two more Hizbul militants were killed in a gunbattle with
a joint search party of the Army and special operations group of
the Jammu and Kashmir police in Zachaldara forest in frontier
district of Kupwara.
Two persons were injured when militants hurled a grenade at a
heavily-guarded government building in Badshah Chowk area here.
The attack was carried out from a nearby bus stand. The building
also housed the office of the Joint Director, Information.
The injured, hailing from Pathankot in Punjab, were hospitalised.
A security jawan was killed and another wounded when militants
set off an improvised explosive device (IED) in Banihal area of
Udhampur district. The spokesman said two security personnel were
injured in an exchange of fire with militants in the same
district.
He said militants shot dead an employee of the Irrigation
Department at his house in Amargarh area in Baramulla district.
Police arrested a Pakistani mercenary in Jammu region's Kana
check sector. At his instance four kg of explosives were
recovered. Security forces arrested two militants, Mohammad
Yousuf Chichi and Lateef Chichi, from their hideout in Bandipora
last night.
