Inland waterways to be extended

NEW DELHI, MAY 25. The Government plans to extend the length of
inland waterways to reduce pressure on other means of transport.
The techno-economic feasibility studies have been conducted on
several of the waterways identified for undertaking such
expansion. They include river Barak, Damodar Valley Corporation
Canal, Sunderbans Waterways, Kakinada Mercaunum Canal integrated
with Godavari and Krishna rivers, East Coast Canal integrated
with Brahmani river system and extension of National Waterway No.
3 towards north and south. Their declaration as national
waterways and subsequent development will dependent on
availability of resources.
The three national waterways - the Ganga from Haldia to Allahabad
(91620 km), the Brahamputra from Dhubri to Sadiya (891 km) and
the West Coast Canal along with Champakara and Udyogmandal Canals
(205 km) are also being developed for shipping and navigation.
