U.P. Cong. revamp soon
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI MAY 25. The process of setting up the Congress party's
organisation Uttar Pradesh is likely to be set in motion in the
next few days. The seven-member special committee on Uttar
Pradesh set up by the party president, Ms. Sonia Gandhi, today
decided to complete the reorganisation process in the State by
the end of the week.
The U.P. committee comprising the Chief Ministers, Mr. Digvijay
singh and Ms. Sheila Dixit, Mr. Prem Singh, Mr. Balram Jhakhar,
Mr. Furqan Ansari, Mr. D.P.Yadav, met at the AICC headquarters
this afternoon. Also present at the meeting were the general
secretary in-charge of the State, Mr. Ghulamnabi Azad, the AICC
treasurer, Mr. Moti Lal Vora and the CWC member, Mr. Oscar
Fernandes and the UPCC chief, Mr. S.P. Jaiswal.
Set up with the purpose of drawing up guidelines and fine tuning
the party's strategy for U.P. which is expected to go to the
polls this year or early next year, the committee was reportedly
of the view that the first task before the body was to put in
shape the party organisation . Both Mr. Azad and Mr. Jaiswal are
likely to finish the exercise of reconstituting the PCC executive
as well as appointing the district presidents and the district
committees by the end of next week.
The Congress president is very concerned about the state of
affairs and her attention is focussed on revitalising the party
in the State. The party leadership is aware that recent victories
will count for nothing in the ultimate analysis at the Centre
until the party's fortunes pick up in the State. Ms. Sonia Gandhi
has been holding extensive discussions with leaders and party
workers from the State as well as outside in order to put in
place a strategy for the party in the State.
Though most of the ideas are still in the drawing board stage, it
is clear that the first task that she has set before the general
secretary in-charge and Mr. S.P.Jaiswal is to put the
organisation in place. The two leaders have also been told to
keep the executive lean and to ensure that the social and
regional imbalances are also taken care of.
