Attitude matters, not age
AGING IS an inevitable process, and irrevocable too. Hence,
Shakespeare's lines "Age, I abhor thee: Youth I adore thee" no
longer appeals me. Robert Browning is now my favourite because he
wrote - "Grow old with me, the best is yet to be, the last of
life for which the first was made." His words are more
comforting.
The other day as I was combing my once long tresses, I spotted a
silver streak. This made my blood pressure shoot up. I mustered
the courage to check if there were more silver strands and found
clusters of grey. I realised age was catching up on me.
My mind and body these days refuse to help me get out of bed
every morning. This 'starting trouble'at the beginning of the day
is a tell-tale sign of aging. And the moment I get up, I can only
think of coffee which acts as an energiser.
Age also brings with it aches and pains. I look green-eyed at
youngsters climbing up and down stairs while I keep counting each
step I can climb. And at the end of the day, when I try to watch
something on the TV, I literally fall asleep in my chair only to
be woken up by the voices around.
The Chinese rightly call middle age, the 'metal age', when you
have silver in your hair, gold in your teeth and lead in your
feet.
But no need to get worked up about your age. What one needs is
the right attitude to handle this phase of life, calmly and
gracefully.
