India, Bangladesh sign new visa agreement
By Haroon Habib
DHAKA, MAY 23. Bangladesh and India have signed a new visa
agreement, which is a major revision of the pact signed 30 years
ago, to further facilitate visits by the people of the two
countries.
The agreement was signed by the Bangladesh Home Secretary, Mr.
M.M. Reza, and the High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh, Mr.
Mani Lal Tripathy here today. The text of the new agreement was
finalised at the seventh meeting of the Bangladesh- India Joint
Working Group in New Delhi in February this year to meet the
contemporary visa requirements of a large number of people who
travel between the two countries for various purposes like
tourism, business, studies, medical attention.
The main feature of the agreement is that a single entry tourist
visa would be valid upto three months from the date of entry.
Students would get visa for their entire period of study in both
the countries.
The Home Secretary, Mr. M.M. Reza, along with his delegates later
called on the Bangladesh Home Minister, Mr. Mohammad Nasim.
The Indian High Commissioner, Mr. Mani Lal Tripathy, said the
agreement mirrored the mutual desire of the two Governments to
further facilitate people-to-people contacts.
