New Press Council notified

NEW DELHI, MAY 23. The Union Government has notified the new Press Council with 28 members for a three-year term.

The notification was issued by the Information and Broadcasting Ministry on Tuesday, an official release said today.

The term of the earlier council ended in March this year. However, the chairman, Mr. P.B. Sawant's term expires only in August.

Among the newspaper editors nominated to the council are, Mr. Hari Jai Singh, Mr. Nikunj R Patel, Mr. J.S. Dardi, Mr. Sheetla Singh, Mr. Rajeeva Kumar Arora and Mr. Alok Mehta.

Other working journalists in the new council are: Mr. Shresh Akhouri, Mr. Vivek Saxena, Mr. Narayan Thiagarajan, Mr. Geetartha Pathak, Mr. Raghu Rai, Mr. R. Venkataraman and Ms. Sabina Inderjeet.

Members nominated from among persons involved in business of management of newspapers are Mr. Vijay Darda, Mr. R. Lakshmipathy, Mr. Vijay Chopra, Mr. Pratap T Shah, Mr. Sunil Dang and Mr. Sushil Jhalani.

The PTI General Manager, Mr. M.K. Razdan, has been nominated in the category of persons managing news agencies.

Mr. Kapil Kumar has been nominated by the UGC, Mr. Raghuveer Chaudhari by the Sahitya Akademi and Mr. Inderjit Mahanty by the Bar Council of India as persons having special knowledge or practical experience in education, science, law, literature and culture. The MPs in the new council are Mr. Kamal Nath, Mr. Harin Pathak, Prof. A.K. Premajam, Mr. Rajeev Shukla and Mr. Kapil Sibal.
