Sangeet varsity to start short-term Ph.D. courses
By Aarti Dhar
KHAIRAGARH, MAY 20. The Indira Kala Sangeet University, Asia's
only university of music and fine arts, plans to start short-term
Ph.D. courses for foreign students. This would be the first
course of its kind in any university and help in revenue
generation.
According to the Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Indrani Chakravarti, the
course is meant for the students outside India who have to pay
for the course. Some French students have expressed the desire to
opt for the new course.
The Khairagarh University was the first university to start a
Foundation Course in Fundamental Arts way back in 1979 which was
attended by eminent artists of the country.
Another course to be introduced will be the Distant Education
Programme in Music. The University has already started a Post
Graduate Diploma in Travel, Tourism and Indian Culture. A Diploma
course in Museology and Indian Culture is also being run by the
Department of Ancient History.
Dr. Chakravarti says introduction of computers is a top priority
of the University. Computer music, music production and computer
designing are some of the subjects to be started in the next
sessions. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has accepted a
proposal from the University to fund these projects and connect
the university through INFLIDNET - internetting of all libraries
in the world for reference and research.
The university is in the process of preparing a note on starting
an Academic Staff College here on the request of the UGC.
However, computerisation is facing some problems because of lack
of space.
