U.P. against ban on SIMI
By Our Special Correspondent
MUMBAI, MAY 15. Unlike Maharashtra, the Uttar Pradesh Government
is not in favour of banning the Students Islamic Movement of
India (SIMI) for its alleged anti-national activities.
The UP Chief Minister, Mr. Rajnath Singh, told reporters here
today that his government would not like it to go clandestine. He
said the State Government was taking stern action against all
engaged in anti- national activities. The U.P. Government had not
written to the Centre recommending a ban. He said the opinion of
the Maharashtra Government could be different.
When asked if SIMI was involved in any anti-national activity,
Mr. Singh said that reports about it were not positive.
Replying to a question, the chief minister said the special court
trying the Ayodhya demolition case had not ordered the state
government to issue any fresh notification. ``I should be first
told if such a notification was required,'' he said.
