A shot in the arm
NEW DELHI, MAY 14. In an attempt to give a boost to the
discipline, the Sports Ministry has expanded the list of eligible
shooters from 10 to 25 in each category for import of arms and
ammunition.
At least 150 top shooters in the country will now be allowed to
import weapons and ammunition for practice. ``This will go a
longway in increasing India's chances to win medals in the
international arena,'' said National Rifle Association of India's
(NRAI) Secretary-General Baljeet Singh Sethi at a press
conference here on Monday.
Till now only the top ten shooters in each group (viz seniors,
juniors etc) were in the `renowned shot' category. He said the
decision to this effect was communicated to NRAI on May 11 by the
Ministry after sustained efforts undertaken by it for the last
two years.
The Ministry has also assured NRAI that the process of giving go-
ahead for the import of weapons and ammunition to shooters will
be expedited at all levels, Sethi said.
