Door's ajar, up close

THEY EVOKE extreme emotions. Hope and despair, joy and anguish. A door opening, a door closing - it could mean different things to different people. To city shutterbug, B. Prabhakar, they have proved to be a doorway to success. He has clicked his way to fame and glory through them.

One possibly can't do without doors. And there is no counting how many times one passes through them. But how many will cast a second look on them or pause to appreciate their beauty? To Prabhakar, doors have always held a strange fascination. And Hyderabad being the `City of Minars', khidkiyan and darwazas, he has taken a special liking for them.

Prabhakar's love for doors has paid off and he has bagged the coveted Royal Photographic Society (RPS) award for his photographs on doors. An employee of Dena Bank, Prabhakar has been shooting away for the past two decades.

But why doors? "Hyderabad is full of elegant and aesthetically made doors. And many of them are being pulled down for road- widening. I thought I should capture them on film for posterity", says Prabhakar. He has shot some 500 frames during the last six months. Of this, he sent a portfolio of 15 which bagged him the associateship from the RPS. Now he can use the letters `ARPS' after his name!

Prabhakar's Nikon captures the creativity and craftsmanship of the old doors in all details. Whether it is the imposing Fateh Darwaza at Golconda, the massive door of Raja Kishan Prasad's devodi near Charminar, or an ancient wooden door in the Old City -- Prabhakar's camera misses nothing. The grandeur, the beauty and the charm are frozen for eternity.
