Focus shifts to counting centres

PONDICHERRY, MAY 12. Over to the counting centres now. The 10
lakh and odd population of the Union Territory of Pondicherry are
keenly looking forward to the results May 10 poll to the
Pondicherry Assembly.
The Bharathidasan Government College for Women is the venue for
counting of votes polled for the 21 constituencies in the
Pondicherry region.
Votes polled in Karaikal (six constituencies), Mahe (two) and
Yanam (one) would be counted in the respective regions
simultaneously at the headquarters of the regions.
Ban on cell phones
Meanwhile, the Joint Chief Electoral Officer has said only
officials connected with the election duty would be permitted to
use cell phones at the counting centres. Others including
presspersons would not have the facility as per the instructions
of the Election Commission.
However, a couple of phone connections for presspersons had been
installed at the counting centres and the numbers are 0413-22 88
44, 0413-22 94 25 and 0413-22 94 26.
The election authorities have also installed phones in Karaikal,
Mahe and Yanam centres.
Nearly 94 per cent of voters who exercised their franchise in the
polls had produced Electors Photo Identity Cards in the Union
Territory. While in the Yanam constituency 97.45 percentage of
voters produced ID cards, in Cottuchery it was 88.04 per cent.
