By Our Special Correspondent

ARIYALUR MAY 12. Ariyalur district, the youngest and the most backward district in the State, had recorded the highest voting percentage of 78.98 among all the 30 districts in the state, said Mr. Rakesh Kumar Yadav, district Collector, today. In the district, Jayamkondam recorded 80.84 per cent, Ariyalur 78.3 per cent and Andimadam 77.6 per cent of votes.

The Kovil Vazhkkai polling booth in the Andimadam constituency recorded the highest of 89.4 per cent.

It was a happy coincidence that as many as 79 per cent of the voters had been issued the EPICs and the voting percentage in the district was 79.9 per cent.

In Ariyalur district, the Azhagiyamanavalam polling booth recorded 89 per cent, and Melaramanallur, an islet in the middle of the Coleroon, which got the polling booth for the first time, recorded 79 per cent. Until now, during summer the voters of the islet had to walk over three km through the hot river bed to cast their votes in the mainland, and if the elections took place in the monsoon season, they had to wade or swim or travel by a coracle to reach the polling station in the mainland.

The Collector said cases had been registered against a DMK agent for carrying without proper explanation Rs. 1.4 lakhs in Rs. 10 denomination, under section 171 (C) 171 (H) and 102 of the IPC, and against an AIADMK agent for carrying Rs. 14, 186 under the same sections.
