Post-result processions banned
By Our Staff Reporter
CHENNAI, MAY. 12. Permission for processions by political parties
after declaration of the Assembly election results will not be
allowed as a precautionary measure. All district SPs and
Commissioners of Police have been instructed to promulgate
prohibitory orders, the Director-General of Police, Dr. R.
Rajagopalan, said today.
Speaking to mediapersons here, the DGP said that over 45,000
police personnel were guarding the 121 buildings, where the
counting centres are located.
Sensitive areas had been identified and additional police
strength provided in these trouble-prone zones. On an average 450
officers and men would be guarding each counting centre.
Only authorised persons would be allowed entry into these
centres. Cell phones, pagers, lighters and matchboxes would not
be allowed into the centres.
Commending the services of the election IGP, Mr. R. Sekar, and
the Railway IGP, Ms. G. Thilagavathi, the DGP said they played an
important role in the peaceful conduct of the elections. They
ensured speedy movement and deployment of central para-military
forces and local police personnel to various destinations and
deployment.
Mr. R. Sekar said these para-military forces would be sent back
in a phased manner during the next couple of days.
Ms. Thilagavathi said the railway police played a liaison role
for the para-military forces which came to the State for election
duty. Measures were taken to ensure that they carried out their
duties without any problem, she added.
