EC urged to intervene in Assam

Guwahati, May 12. (PTI): Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Tarun Gogoi today urged the Election Commission to intervene and stop what he termed as "mass rigging by the AGP-BJP alliance" during yesterday's Assembly poll.

"They (AGP-BJP) under the leadership of Chief minister and AGP President Prafulla Kumar Mahanta indulged in large-scale rigging and the EC must intervene," Gogoi told PTI here.

APCC today staged a dharna in front of the party's headquarters here at Rajiv Bhavan to urge the Commission to intervene and Gogoi said this was not going against the model code of conduct of the EC.

The APCC chief, projected by the party to be the Chief Minister in case of the Congress coming to power, said the very Fact that Repoll was ordered in 206 polling stations pointed to rigging.

He alleged that security forces involved in the election was "not adequate" which gave a chance to the ruling party to indulge in rigging.

The EC should take necessary steps to ensure that such things did not take place, He said.
