Polygamy case referred to Islamic legal cell
NEW DELHI, MAY 12. The All India Muslim Personal Law Board
(AIMPLB) today said the issue of polygamy was being referred to
its legal cell in the wake of the Supreme Court notice on a
petition seeking outlawing of the practice.
Commenting on the apex court notice to the Central Government on
the issue, the AIMPLB president, Mr. Islam Qasmi said in a press
release that the matter would be taken into view after examining
the text of the notice.
The Supreme Court had on Friday issued notice to the Centre on a
petition by a Muslim woman, who was given `talaq' (divorce) by
her husband, seeking issuance of a direction to outlaw the
practice of polygamy in the community.
``Any legislation impinging on the freedom of religion and
compelling the Muslim community to do away with the Islamic
shariat would not be acceptable,'' he said.
