Kuruvinatham records highest voting

By Our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, MAY 11. The Kuruvinatham Assembly constituency registered the highest percentage of polling in yesterday's poll in the Union Territory, Mr.B. Vijayan, Chief Electoral Officer, said.

A total of 15,802 out of 18,924 voters exercised their franchise. Bussy with a voter strength of 6345, the smallest number in the Union Territory, registered the lowest percentage of 50.79.

On the whole, the Union Territory recorded 73.21 per cent of polling, with 4,75,420 of 6,58,424 electors exercising their franchise. Women who cast their vote, outnumbered men, the figures being 2,40,503 and 2,34,917.

The percentage of polling this time was less than what was recorded in 1996 when it was 75 per cent. The Yanam region came second with 15,624 out of 18,727 voters exercising their franchise, recording 83.43 per cent. Meanwhile, the Congress has demanded repoll in five booths in Nellithope.

Mr. V. Narayanaswamy, PCC leader, said a petition had been presented to election authorities, alleging that 360 voters whose names had been deleted were permitted to vote.

The former Chief Minister, Mr.R.V. Janakiraman (DMK), Dr.J. Nannan (AIADMK) and Mr.A. Puviyarasu (Congress) are in the fray in Nellithope. Mr. Narayanaswamy dismissed as unreliable an exit poll conducted by Doordarshan, saying the method adopted was not scientific.

Asserting that the Congress-TMC-CPI combine would emerge with a thumping majority to form the next government, he said he could see an overwhelming response from the voters to the secular front. Rural constituencies showed enthusiastic support to the Congress.
