More instances of deletion of names in Pondy
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, MAY 11. Reports of deletion of names of voters from
the rolls for various constituencies keep pouring in from
different quarters.
A resident at Rajaji Nagar said today that of the nine voters in
the family, only the names of five were found in the list.
When he and his relatives went to the booth to exercise franchise
on Thursday after waiting in the queue on Thursday, officials
told him that his and other names were deleted.
As he wanted to know the reason, the official said a
clarification could be had only from the returning officer. The
voter said while the list available to candidates and polling
booths had the names intact, the one maintained by the officer at
the booth had discrepancies.
The resident said he had been living in the house for decades.
Photo Identity cards had been issued to him and others. They had
voted in the last Assembly and parliamentary polls.
When the issue was taken up with the election authorities, it was
pointed out that unless there was a change of residence,
deletions could not occur. But voters should also check at the
time of publication of the draft lists to make sure that their
names were in the list.
But some voters argue that even after presenting the relevant
forms for inclusion, their names were missing. A voter gave an
application for inclusion in the list at the place where he
moved, but his name was missing.
Identity cards alone did not help such people. The list with the
authorities should contain the names. But the onus of preparing a
full-fledged list rests with the poll authorities, it is argued.
