Pulse polio final phase

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, MAY. 11.

The second phase of moping up Pulse Polio Programme will be organised here from May 14 to 19 under which all children in the age group of 0-5 years will be administered polio drops from going door to door.

Stating this here today, the Delhi Health and Family Welfare Minister, Dr. A. K. Walia, said the Capital was inching closer towards the goal of a polio-free city. In 2001, he said only one case of polio has been detected so far. ``We have to bring the level to zero so that Delhi could become polio-free,'' he added.

Over 7200 teams have been constituted for administering polio drops, covering 38 lakh dwelling units from May 14. Besides, 1,260 supervisors and 45 area co-ordinators have been deployed to monitor this programme. Teams would be deployed at airports, railway stations, inter-state bus terminals, national highways, children's entertainment sites and creches.

Dr. Walia appealed to all Delhi-ites in general and those parents in particular who have children in the age group of 0-5 years to extend maximum help in this campaign. The teams have been given identity cards and would be carrying the vaccine in the authorised carriers under strict cold chain conditions.

Besides, he also appealed to all leaders and workers of social, religious and political organisations, NGOs and resident welfare associations to give a helping hand, so that the dream of making the Capital polio-free can be fulfilled soon.

He clarified that there was no harm in administering pulse polio drops to children again and again in various phases as it gives more protection to them. As many as 179 countries have become polio-free by adopting the strategy of pulse polio immunisation programme.

About 21.5 lakh children were administered pulse polio drops in the first phase of the Pulse Polio Immunisation Programme (PPIP), conducted successfully in the Capital last month.
