Five retiring MLCs felicitated

BANGALORE, MAY 11. The five nominated members of the Legislative Council who retired on Friday were given a warm farewell by the acting Chairman, members of the House and staff members of the Council at a function here.

The members who retired are Ms. Saritha Kusumakar Desai, advocate and writer from Gulbarga, Dr. Siddalingaiah, Kannada writer and academic (both were part of the separate or independent group of the Janata Dal), Mr. H.L. Nage Gowda (JD-Secular), retired IAS officer and authority on folk arts, Mr. Mahadeva Banakar (JD- United), writer and Kannada activist, and Dr. Yejasuddin (JD-S), Professor of Hindi.

The acting Chairman of the Council, Mr. David Simeon, who presided over the function, praised the retiring members and said they had enriched the debates in the House and taken up several matters of public interest.

He said it was the unique tradition of the Legislative Council to felicitate and honour retiring members and recall their services.

Mr. Simeon said that Ms. Desai was a social worker of repute who had championed the cause of women in the State. She had rendered great service by taking up the cause of the socially deprived and educationally backward sections. She had participated in all the debates of the Council. Her efforts helped secure a women's polytechnic for Gulbarga, he added.

He said the other members who retired on Friday had also enriched the Council with their experience and knowledge. They had added luster to debates.

Other members who felicitated the retiring members were Mr. P. Ramiah, Mr. Honnappa, Ms. Nirmala Venkatesh, Mr. K.B. Shanappa and Mr. Maruthirao Mane.

Mr. Saleem Ahmed, Chief Whip, participated in thee function. Mr. Rudrappa, Council Secretary, welcomed the gathering.
