Anand triumphs

COLOMBO, MAY 8. World chess champion Viswanathan Anand won the Mirabal Rapid tournament on better tie-break after scoring eight points from nine games in Spain on Monday.

Anand, 31, who will be playing in the Carlos Torre Memorial tournament in Mexico next week, warmed up by winning this two-day rapid tournament and finished ahead of 240 players that included scores of Grandmasters. Anand scored a final round victory over V. Lazarev with the white pieces.

The placings: 1. GM V. Anand (Ind) 8/9; 2. FM Cristian Dolezal (Arg) 8; 3-4. GM G.G. Hernandez (Mex), GM Bogdan Lalic (Eng) 7.5 each; 5-8. V. Lazarev (Rus), GM A. Kolev (Bul), GM O. Korneev (Rus), GM R. Cifuentes Parada (ESP) and others 7 each.
