Foundation for Kakinada-Kotipalli line on Friday

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, MAY 7. The Minister of State for Railways, Mr O. Rajagopal, will lay the foundation-stone for restoration of the historic Kakinada-Kotipalli line at the Kotipalli railway station at 11 am on Friday.

The Lok Sabha Speaker, Mr G. M. C. Balayogi, will be present as the chief guest along with a host of Ministers, MPs and MLAs from the State.

According to a press note released on Monday by the South Central Railway headquarters here, the railway line between the two places was first laid in 1928 to connect the agriculturally rich Godavari delta with the rest of the world, but it was later dismantled during World War II. The restoration of the line for this 45-km stretch at a cost of Rs 66 crores, has been necessitated by the fact that the area has grown industrially since then due to presence of oil and gas resources, a large number of power plants, existing or proposed, fertilizer units, and location of ports in the vicinity.

The note said, the line, on completion, would pass through Ramachandrapuram, Draksharamam and 12 other major towns. The work on the restoration is expected to be taken up in a big way this year as Rs 10 crores has been provided in this year's budget.
