Foreign funds net buyers in debt and equities

MUMBAI, MAY 6. The foreign institutional investors (FIIs) and mutual funds (MFs) showed divergent trend in investment in equities in April, the first month of fiscal 2001-02, with the former being net buyers at Rs. 1,769.9 crores ($379.7 million). MFs were net sellers in equities at Rs. 293.40 crores in the reporting month.

However, FIIs and MFs, both were net buyers in debt at Rs. 208.9 crores ($44.8 million) and Rs. 744.62 crores respectively, according to the data available with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI).

The foreign funds were net buyers on 17 trading days in equities and 11 days in debt. MFs remained net buyers in equities and debt on 12 and 17 days respectively.

On April 19, the day Reserve Bank of India announced the credit policy for 2001-02, the foreign funds bought equities worth Rs. 483.1 crores while offloading to the tune of Rs. 181.8 crores, thus making the highest net purchases of the month at Rs. 301.4 crores ($64.6 million). FIIs were also net buyers of Rs. 190.2 crores ($40.8 million) and Rs. 188.3 crores ($40.4 million) in equities on April 23 and April 16, SEBI data said.MFs, on the other hand, recorded highest net sales in equities on April 11 of Rs. 62.98 crores.
